For years, General Motors CEO and Chair Mary Barra has promised a new future for the company, away from a stodgy metal-bending automaker into a tech-driven, forward-thinking company poised for growth.

The automaker is folding Cruise, its San Francisco-based subsidiary, into its in-house efforts to develop autonomous driving for personal vehicles.

Automotive giant General Motors announced Tuesday that it would be pulling funding from its robotaxi firm Cruise, though it gestured at future plans to continue developing self-driving cars.

In an announcement that’s shocked many, GM has said it will no longer provide funding for Cruise, its robotaxi service. Instead, the automaker says it’s pouring resources into autonomous driving and driver assistance technologies for passenger vehicles sold to private individuals.
