Legislation approved Thursday in the Michigan Senate would ban the manufacturing, assembling, selling, purchasing, importing and possessing of firearms or firearm parts that don’t have a valid serial number.

Supporters of the measures argued they would help combat gun violence, but opponents said they would infringe on Michigan residents' rights.

The Senate Thursday night also voted to ban bump stock devices, like the one used in a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, that can allow semi-automatic guns to fire rapidly with one continuous press of the trigger. The bills still have an uphill battle to become law.

The state Senate voted in favor of banning ghost guns in Michigan. That includes the sale, transfer and manufacture of the controversial firearms.

This type of gun was used in the New York shooting of the United Healthcare CEO. A committee approved a bill Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Lansing .
