PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday named centrist ally François Bayrou as prime minister, after a historic parliamentary vote ousted the previous government last week.

The new prime minister, a Macron ally, must try to assemble a government, regain control of France’s deficit and satisfy warring political factions.

Embattled French President Emmanuel Macron said he hoped to appoint a new prime minister in the coming days, in a combative televised address that will do little to ease a deepening political crisis.
