Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing a New York doctor for allegedly providing telemedicine and abortion pills to a woman in Texas, setting up a legal battle over the state’s abortion ban and a dueling New York law set up to shield doctors who prescribe abortion care to patients in states where the procedure is prohibited.

The law bars public entities from cooperating with out-of-state investigations into reproductive health care services, protects against subpoenas and witness summonses and prohibits the extradition of lawsuit defendants to other states.

This case sets up a legal battle between Texas’ near-total abortion ban and New York’s shield law that protects doctors from out-of-state prosecution.
