Kolkata: West Bengal Minister for Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Firhad Hakim on Saturday compared the “majority” and “minority” communities in the country which created a controversy. Addressing a programme at the state-run auditorium in Kolkata,

"Kolkata's Mayor, Firhad Hakim, previously revealed his true intentions by describing non-Muslims as 'unfortunate' and endorsing Dawat-e-Islam's efforts to convert Hindus to Islam. He has now claimed that West Bengal, along with the rest of India, will soon have a Muslim majority," Malviya said.

In the video, Hakim points out that while Muslims constitute 17 percent of the national population, they make up 33 percent in West Bengal yet are still labeled as a minority.

Firhad Hakim's remark sparked a massive row, drawing a sharp response from the BJP leaders, who accused him of "openly inciting communal hatred."

Several BJP leaders shared video of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim where he can be heard saying that Muslims can be bigger than majority. BJP accused him of “openly inciting communal hatred” and promoting a “dangerous agenda” akin to creating a "Bangladesh-type situation in India.

In response to the reported comments by West Bengal Minister and TMC leader Firhad Hakim on Muslim empowerment in the state, West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar questioned the mindset of all Muslim leaders in the TMC.
